We needed to confirm whether koalas were present in Glenorie, Maroota, and Maroota Forest regions.
Is there a breeding population?
Understanding whether koalas were reproducing locally was crucial for conservation planning.

Mapping koala distribution would help identify critical habitat areas requiring protection.
After that first sighting in 2018, we set out to answer

Community Powered Research
Over five years, dedicated community members helped us build a comprehensive koala sightings map.
Each observation contributed to our understanding of local koala presence and movement patterns.
This grassroots data collection demonstrated the power of community science and laid the foundation for more advanced research methods.
Thermal Drone Breakthrough
Working with Wildseek, we conducted thermal drone surveys over two winters. The results exceeded our expectations:
We confirmed 16 koalas in the region.
Female scat samples and call recordings provided definitive evidence of breeding females, confirming a viable local koala population.
This scientific validation transformed our understanding and strengthened our conservation advocacy.
